The Gods of the Theater

The context: It's the big climax of the show. (SPOILERS AHEAD). The evil mastermind is revealed to be... Annabelle! Sweet, supportive Annabelle! She and her close friend Milo have a big showdown, as she takes more and more of the spy-pills, growing increasingly intense and manic as a nuclear missile is pointed at the theater. How will it end?!?

A little about the creation of the song: I wanted grand and purple words, and (relatively) rock and roll music. And something catchy that's fun to sing and watch. I wanted evil patter for Annabelle, and soaring rock high notes for Milo. I love singing this song, and can't wait to see the actors sink their teeth into it, and into the scenery.

The Gods of the Theater
Music & Lyrics by David Rackoff

              ANNABELLE
THE GODS OF THE THEATER, THE MOMENT TIME BEGAN
IN AN ANCIENT AND MAGIC AGE…
WELL, THE GODS OF THE THEATER TOOK CLAY AND MADE A MAN
ALL ALONE ON THIS TRAGIC STAGE.

     IT’S NOTHING LIKE BROADWAY.
     IT’S BARREN AND BLEAK.
     THIS DRAMA THEY GAVE US
     IS PRACTIC’LLY GREEK.
ALL MY LIFE, I’VE HAD TO WAIT
     TO FINALLY FULFILL MY FATE,
     BUT TODAY, HE’LL SEE
     THAT BROADWAY IS NOTHING
     AS EPIC AS ME.

THE GOD OF THE THEATER LOOK DOWN ON ME IN AWE,
LIKE THE HEROINE OF MACBETH.
YES, THE GODS OF THE THEATER FORGIVE A FATAL FLAW,
AND REDEEM ME WITH LOVE THROUGH DEATH.

             MILO
THE GODS OF THE THEATER LOOK DOWN ON US IN GRIEF,
AND THEY WEEP AS WE SEEK OUT WAR.
BUT THE GODS OF THE THEATER SUSPEND OUR DISBELIEF,
AND THE SHOW US THE WEAK CAN SOAR!

             ANNABELLE/MILO
AND THE MEEK AND THE HEIRS
          GET THEIRS.

THE GODS OF THE THEATER, THE MUSES AND THE FATES
WITH THE KING AND THE HUMBLE CLOWN,
ALL THE GODS OF THE THEATER HAVE LOCKED US IN THE GATES,
’TIL THE COLUMNS COME TUMBLING DOWN!

             ANNABELLE
LOOK AT YOU, A SIMPLE SINGLE CELL,
               YOU’RE PRIMORDIAL OOZE AND GEL.
               A PROTO-PROTOZOA.
LOOK AT ME, I’M GIN AND JUICE,
I AM JUPITER, MARS, AND ZEUS.
               I’M MOSES, AND I’M NOAH.

     (ANNABELLE takes a pill.)

             MILO
                    AHHHHHHH…

             ANNABELLE
LOOK AT YOU, A GREAT BIG GAPING VOID,
WHO IS GONNA BE SOON DESTROYED.
               A METEORIC CRATER.
LOOK AT ME, A GREAT BIG BLAST
WHO IS HURTLING TOWARD YOU FAST.
               DESTROYER AND CREATOR.

     (ANNABELLE takes a pill.)

             MILO
                    AHHHHHHHHH…

             ANNABELLE
LOOK AT THAT, YOUR SKULL IS SOFT AND SWEET,
               IT’S ADORABLE AND PETITE.
               IT’S BARELY EVEN BRAINY.
LOOK AT THIS, MY BRAIN IS STIFF.
SO COME CLOSER AND TAKE A WHIFF.
               IT’S THROBBING AND IT’S VEINY!

             ANNABELLE/KISHKA/BIXBY/MILO
THE GODS OF THE THEATER, THE MUSES AND THE FATES
WITH THE KING AND THE HUMBLE CLOWN,
ALL THE GODS OF THE THEATER HAVE LOCKED US IN THE GATES,
’TIL THE COLUMNS COME TUMBLING DOWN!

(ANNABELLE swallows the rest of the bottle of pills.)

THE GODS OF THE THEATER, THE MUSES AND THE FATES
WITH THE KING AND THE HUMBLE CLOWN,
ALL THE GODS OF THE THEATER HAVE LOCKED US IN THE GATES,
’TIL THE COLUMNS COME TUMBLING DOWN!

             ANNABELLE
AHHHHHHHHHH…

(ANNABELLE begins to feel ill. She runs over to the ghost light and vomits the pills into it.)
