The context: This is from a small clever farce show I'm working on. The character (a wealthy ingenue and supporter of the arts) thinks she might just take a chance on love (with the sweet main character).
A little about the creation of this song: I don't want to spoil anything in case you one day see the show. But she may secretly be the villain of the piece. Still, the feelings she's sharing with the audience are sincere. So I wanted her to use romantic metaphors, but to use them a little too literally (and viscerally-- literally viscerally, i.e. neck, chest, heart). Also, I wrote the music to this song, as well as the lyrics!

Sticking My Neck Out Again
Music & Lyrics by David Rackoff
Music & Lyrics by David Rackoff
I’M STICKING MY HEAD OUT AGAIN,
BUT I’VE LEARNED TO BE CAUTIOUS. STICKING MY NECK OUT AGAIN. IT’S OKAY THAT I’M NAUSEOUS AT FIRST… I’LL OPEN MY CHEST UP TONIGHT, AND I’LL FIND THAT IT’S MENDED. OPEN MY HEART UP TONIGHT. THE RESULTS WILL BE SPLENDID, FOR ONCE… AS A KID, OTHER KIDS WERE THE PEOPLE WHO HURTED ME. THEN I GREW UP, BUT STILL PEOPLE DESERTED ME. ONCE I WAS SWEET, I WAS OPEN AND GUILELESS. NOW I AM SMART, I AM SAFE, BUT I SMILE LESS. YOU, I COULD SING, I COULD WRITE OPERETTA FOR. YOU ARE THE WHAT, ARE THE WHY, OF MY METAPHOR. I’LL JUMP FROM A PLANE FROM THE CLOUDS, LOOK STRAIGHT UP, AND YOU’LL SPOT ME. ONTO YOUR HEAD, FROM THE CLOUDS! I’M SO GLAD THAT YOU CAUGHT ME. IF YOU TAKE CARE OF MY HEAD, LOOK INTO MY HEART, I’LL JUMP FROM THE PLANE AT LAST… AT LAST… AT LAST! |
